Placing limit orders without accidentally paying taker fees: a note for readers in Ukraine

Guides · 2026-10-01

A typical surprise goes like this: you place a limit order expecting the lower maker fee, it fills at once and the history shows a higher charge. Nothing went wrong. The platform simply treated the order as a taker because it matched immediately. Understanding why this happens takes a few minutes and can save a noticeable amount over many trades. This note explains the logic, shows how to check the order book before you set a price and where to verify the result afterwards. It cites no fee figures, since rates differ by account and change.

Why a limit order can be a taker

The role is decided by what happens on arrival. If your buy limit is at or above the lowest sell offer, it matches immediately with that offer and takes liquidity. If it sits below that offer, it joins the queue and waits. So the word limit describes how you set the price, not what role the order will play. The same applies on the sell side in the opposite direction.

Read the book before choosing a price

Look at the best buy and sell prices on the order book. To act as a maker, place your buy below the lowest sell offer and your sell above the highest buy bid. If those levels are very close together, even a small change in price can flip your order into the taker role. In calm markets, the gap is usually small, so a careless click is easy.

Use protective options where they exist

Many platforms offer a post-only option that cancels an order which would otherwise match immediately, so you never pay the taker rate by accident. The name and availability vary between Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget, and between products, so read the help centre. Remember that a cancelled post-only order means you did not trade, which may or may not be what you want.

Confirm in your history

After placing orders, open the history and check the role and the fee on each fill, then compare with the official fee page. Keep dated notes on several trades. If you discover that most of your fills were takers despite using limit orders, adjust the prices you choose or accept that you value speed, which is a legitimate trade-off.
